UPDATE: I’ve been looking to the SAG to Oscar pattern over the last few years and generally 4 of the 5 acting Oscar nominees are also nominated for the Actor. Bad news for Atonement and Sweeney Todd, which didn’t get any love from the SAG. That’s also bad new for Charlie Wilson’s War, which has been on an upswing for the past week or so. They didn’t even nominate Phillip Seymour Hoffman! The reviews for all the films I mention are positive, but in a year packed with great movies, it maybe easy for these ones to get lost.

Who gets the biggest boost out of all this? 3:10 to Yuma, which Lionsgate is likely to push hard leading into the nominating month. Off the radar until now, the Western may find its place in the running after all. The Academy does love their James Mangold. It also looks like Into the Wild, snubbed hardily by the Globes, may sneak into the spot people reserved for it months ago. The globes are pretty much irrelevant anymore, with the BCFA having more of an Oscar sensibility and none of the Globe pretensions. Into the Wild was a hit at SAG and with the BCFA. You do the math.

ORIGINAL: When Sasha over at AwardsDaily.com says “Nobody Knows Anything,” the Screen Actors Guild is right there to back her up. So, Hairspray, 3:10 to Yuma, and American Gangster all snag the best ensemble nominations (think Best Picture). Tommy Lee Jones gets some love for the first time this year with a Supporting Actor nomination for his role in No Country. I’ll have some additional comments later when I get to looking at the SAG nomination history, but the Guilds are VERY important, more so than the critics groups, in determining who will go one to get nominated or win an Oscar.
