Joss Whedon Helped Pen THOR: THE DARK WORLD Scenes, Says The Film’s Director

There’s a game I used to play when watching (and rewatching) episodes of Buffy, Angel and any Whedon series really. The game basically involves not reading the show’s opening credits and just listening to the dialog to see if Joss Whedon scripted the episode. The way he writes is that distinct.

By now, I’ve seen enough of his shows more than once to know which ones he wrote, so the game isn’t as fun as it used to be. Thankfully, I’ll be able to try my hand at it with Thor: The Dark World.

In an interview with SFX Magazine (courtesy of CBM), the film’s director Alan Taylor said Whedon rescued the Thor sequel a few times by helping rewrite scenes:

“Joss came in to save our lives a couple of times. We had a major scene that was not working on the page at all in London, and he basically got airlifted in, like a SWAT team or something. He came down, rewrote the scene, and before he got back to his plane I sort of grabbed him and said, ‘And this scene and this scene?’ And he rewrote two other scenes that I thought had problems. Then finally we let go of him, he took off again, and we shot the scenes; and they were just much better and much lighter on their feet. Much more fun, much more surprising than what we had been trying to do. I can relate to guys who come out of the TV world, since that’s where I come from. And being able to land and work and solve a problem quickly… I really was grateful.”

It easy to see why Whedon would lend his hand to another Marvel property. This film, more so than Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, kicks off Marvel Phase 2 which leads into Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. The Avengers sequel’s success is really dependent on the lead-in films, rather than your traditional P&A push.

And really, who is going to complain when Whedon lends his hand to anything? The king of all geekdom is at the height of his career. Everything he touches seems to turn to gold. If a Whedon rewrite is what it takes to make the weakest link in the Avengers line-up work (sorry, Thor fans), than we should all be for it.
