David Fincher Wins the Best Direction VMA For Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie”
Director David Fincher may not have won the elusive Oscar for Best Director quite yet, but he’s still wracking up Moonmen after all these years. At last night’s Video Music Awards, Fincher took home his third trophy for Best Direction, this time for Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” video featuring Jay-Z.
Back in the late 80s and early 90s, Fincher was a prolific music video director. He earned two Moonmen back-to-back in 1989 and 1990 for Madonna’s “Express Yourself” and “Vogue,” respectively. And in 1989 he earned three of the four available nominations.
While Fincher has only directed six videos since 1992 when he made his feature film debut with Alien3, Fincher’s recent team-up with his The Social Network star proved he’s still got it after all these years… and that Fincher better director a black and white movie someday. I mean, this is his second win for a black and white video, so it just makes sense.
The VMA for “Suit & Tie” may not be Fincher’s last not-Oscar win this year. Next month, Fincher is up for the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series Emmy for his work on House of Cards.
