Hardwicke to direct Hirsch in Hamlet
RSSS

Variety is reporting that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke will direct Emile Hirsch in an modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Hardwicke directing Hamlet strikes me as the perfect creative follow up to her disturbing Stephenie Meyer adaptation.

Now, that’s not a dig at Meyer suggesting that the author is no Shakespeare (which she is not). But take a moment to consider the characters Bella and Ophelia. Both female characters define themselves by their relationship to a brooding male romantic interest. Ophelia’s tragic end serves an appropriate cautionary tale whereas Bella’s “love story” only further romanticizes this unhealthy notion.

Hopefully Hardwicke’s Ophelia is more Thirteen than Twilight.

Enough Hardwicke, though. Who’s dying to see Emile Hirsch take on Hamlet?
